Hello, everyone! I'm Kari and I was trying to put off joining this board until I had seen some more Clara Bow films but I just wanted to join so badly. From what little I have seen (It, Mantrap, and The Plastic Age) she was such an extraordinary actress as well as fun and pretty. I look forward to getting to know everyone here and learning more about the wonderful Clara along the way. ;D

hello people ... [/img] i actually had never even heard of clara bow until last weekend ... they were showing lots of audrey hepburn movies on TCM and I was on Ebay looking for items that might have belonged to her ... i came across a necklace that was actually owned by audrey and started checking out some of the other items this person had for sale and he had a hat that clara bow had personally owned ... he had a little info about clara and it intrigued me ... so i got on google and tried to find more info about clara ... then i came across this site ... i had to join ... about like i had to bid on clara's hat ... something was drawing me to it ... now i'm trying to get one of her movies -- i'm a fan ... and haven't even seen a movie ... that's kinda strange isn't it? about as strange as buying a hat from the 1920's that clara owned!

Welcome, Krizia! I'm glad you've joined us I think the Betty Boop cartoons must have been at least inspired by Clara and her roles. The creators were also probably influenced by the singer Helen Kane, whose voice sounds very much like Betty's

Hi,
My name is David, but on this board you can call me "Klaatu" (if you don't know who that is check out THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, 1951). I'm probably older than most of the folks on this board. I'm 52.
I was raised in the fabulous fifties. I was part of the first generation to raised with television. My mother would always brag to her friends what a great baby sitter the TV was. She'd park me in front of it and I'd trance out for hours. In those days the local TV stations were struggling to fill their airtime. The way they'd do it was to pad their schedules with lots and lots of old movies. So the brain engrams for black & white images and plenty of snappy dialog got imprinted on my brain and a pre-consicence age.
My movie tastes are pretty omnivorous. I can happily watch a silent drama, a depression-era musical, a forties film-noir, a fifties sci-fi flick, a sixties western, a seventies blood-spatter cult classic, an eighties tear-jerker, a nineties foreign-language film and a current day box-office hopeful and be equally contented. But if I had to chose one of those it would be the silent era. There's something so fresh and sweet in silent cinema that I find lacking in much later work.
I've taken part in heated discussions on the most desirable woman star in the movies. I've listened to champions of Marilyn Monroe, Catherine Deneuve, Bridget Bardot and on and on and on. I will always hold out for Clara Bow. I defy anyone to see her in IT and not fall madly in love with her.
I haven't see anywhere near enough of CB's films! I saw DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS (1922) but she was so young there (16 when it was made, if I recall correctly) that it just didn't look like her. I saw IT & WINGS (both from 1927). I've seen two of her talkies - THE WILD PARTY (1929) and CALL HER SAVAGE (1932). The talkies weren't very good. It just looked like she wasn't having a good time (but she still had plenty of "IT," especially in CALL HER SAVAGE). I loved both the movies and her performace in them concerning IT & WINGS.
One of the ones that I've always wanted to see is HULA (1927). I give talks sometimes on silent cienma. I've told the following story several times. The sad punchline has always been that we'll never know what the excitement was about. HULA's a lost film. If that was true before, it's not now. I've been to sites where DVD's of HULA are for sale with Clara Bow's picture on it.
Charles Amos, manager of the 2,400 seat Florida Theater in St. Petersburg, FL, ran a huge campaign to promote Clara Bow’s HULA. Three weeks before the release he put a 24 sheet on a downtown building and illuminated it with a powerful flood light. A dozen small Clara Bow cutouts (in costume) were placed around soda fountains, beach stands and shop windows. Two weeks before the release displays were placed in music store windows while the electric Victrola played Hawaiian music every night. A life-sized Clara Bow cutout, mechanized to do the hula, was placed in various locations around town. Its real grass skirt, fresh flowers and shimmying action stopped traffic. The week of the release Amos had a forty foot banner dropped from the roof of his theatre. He had advanced programs inserted into every dry cleaning order. He placed advanced announcements on the back of every cab in St. Petersburg. He got 8 local girls to dress up as Hawaiian and do the hula. He filmed them and ran the film with every trailer. He did all this for a two-day run on October 12-13, 1927.

Welcome, Klaatu! Sounds like you're a big fan of the silent era. I often wish that they still had those late shows where they'd give you old movies at really early/late hours, instead of the infomercials they have now That life-sized cutout of Clara sounds amazing!

Hello, I'm Anna. I recognize a few names here from other boards. I've got a John Gilbert site that some of you may like at www.silentfilmlegend.blogspot.com Leave comments if you like! I love to hear from silent movie fans. As far as Bow goes, I first loved her in It, like most people. I also like Wings and Mantrap and think she was just about the most interesting actress in silent movies (she was so much more expressive and, well, adorable, than anyone else I've seen). Here are just a very few of my favourite photos of her: And just one of Gilbert, so that you are sufficiently tempted to visit my site...

Well hello everybody, my name is Monica and I live in miami, I am a huge classic film lover! and I got to be honest, I have not really seen any of clara bow's work but I have read a little about her, and every time I see a pic of her I must admit it intrigued me to learn more about her so I hear everyone brag about the movie "IT" now I gotta add it to my "must see" list lol. Everyone tells me she was adorable in "IT". Well I guess that's about it, I really am enjoying this forum, I really don't remember how I came across it, I must've been doing a google search for classic star films message boards when I came across this board and I'm glad I did, I love what I see so far
